“Sinis-[thesia]” is a compilation of 5 short plays under EJKLS Seni’s the Young Blood Experiment – a mentoring programme for new writer-directors in KL, with EJKLS Seni’s founder and artistic director, Asyraf Syahir, as the instructor. In this particular project, the February Cohort of TYBE will be having their third and FINAL theatrical showcase; featuring the works of Violacea Low (Lancome, Loewe and Loro Piana ft. Eunice), Effa Qamariani (Tilik ft. Hanna Lee), Yashvin Kumar (Dilematilah ft. Harshini, directed by Adam Syahmi), Jazmine Charles (Bloody Mary ft. Tia), and a special appearance from last year’s 2023 TYBE Cohort, Mikahluz Namia (Me:em ft. zhnaqeeb). The play will be staged in a promenade style theatre (think of it like an escape room-ish kinda style) so audience should anticipate having to move from one area to another. Each of the play would be the writer-directors’ interpretations of the prompt “Sinis-[thesia]”.

“The Open Door Project” is EJKLSSeni’s latest initiative to make our space more accessible and inclusive, whereby we provide opportunities for local theatre makers and emerging production teams in KL to stage small-scale minimalist playlets (10-15 minute plays) for free at our fringe arts space, pangkin@ejklsseni, Wangsa Maju. Creators’ Lab is a periodical event by EJKLS Seni. It aims to provide a safe space for artists of different artistic backgrounds to experiment and showcase their latest works or experimentations. The event celebrates any form and contents (even taboo ones; as long as they are presented in a respectful manner). A short Q&A session will be set-up at the end of the event so that participating artists may get feedbacks from audience members.

“Sometimes We Find Comfort in Lonely Spaces” is a semi-devised piece, co-directed by Mikahluz Namia and Nabilah Baharin, and the whole ensemble of TYBE 2023 cohort (Adam Syahmi, Arezu Karimzadeh, and Ng Tze Wei) as the collective writers of the play. The play revolves around the story of five individuals delving into the meaning of loneliness, emptiness and love. Each character has their conflict of loneliness and how they unexpectedly find comfort in random spaces or people. Their collective story is one of redemption, healing and the enduring power of human connection amidst the chaos of city life.

“If There is An Afterlife, I Hope It’s Your Version Instead of Mine” is a semi-devised piece by Asyraf Syahir Najib. The play revolves around the story of a religiously-skeptical Malay woman in her early 30s (Sofia, played by Myrra Baity Khan) who is pushed to reexamine their beliefs and confront their nihilistic views on life upon taking care of her religious cancer-stricken mother. The narrative of the play will be framed 3 years after her mother’s death; in which, she is finally forced to process her own experience upon having to witness (and be there for) her childhood friends (Ryan, played by LeoniTunez & Vanessa, played by Alya Amani) who are facing a similar experience with the sudden cancer diagnosis of their mother (Ma, played by Erie Woo). The play will dominantly explore the themes of death of a loved one, beliefs and faiths, questions of the afterlife, emotional numbness and self-destructive coping mechanisms.

Kampong Session! is a periodical music event by EJKLS Seni. It aims to bring together Malaysian singer-songwriters to collaborate, network, and create new music in a shared space. Homegrown singer-songwriters involved will spend 24 hours together to create new songs; and all the new songs will be showcased the very next day during the Kampong Session showcase. Participating singer-songwriters will be gathering at our studio on the 11th of May to “berkampong” for a sleepover session and collaborate.

Garam is a semi-devised piece by Asyraf Syahir, featuring Mawar Roseka, Emily Thomas, Yon, Virtuoes Romana, Naveen Raja, and Emran Beams as the main collaborators. The play can be described as a performance about the thoughts, memories, and experiences of 6 artists finding connection with each other amidst their inner struggles with feelings of disconnection and alienation. The play revolves around the story of Marya who has reappeared in the arts scene to work on an experimental project with 5 other artists, after 8 years of disappearing from the scene due to a traumatic incident. The project ultimately forces them to face their inner demons they have been refusing to face and made them realize how much they resonate with each other. The play will dominantly explore the themes of alienation, coming to terms with loss and death, finding comfort in nihilistic thoughts and meaninglessness, trauma-induced artists’ block, and dissociation with one’s self.

Senggama Kata is a periodical poetry event by EJKLS Seni. It aims to bring together Malaysian poets to share and showcase their poetic works on a shared space regardless of language and contents. For each volume, 6 featured poets will perform on each day of the event with no specific theme (with a total of 12 featured poets for both days collectively); and thus, performers are free to select their own contents (taboo-contents are allowed as long as they are presented in a respectful manner) and are free to creatively compose how their performance will be executed (the performance can be spoken word, visualization, etc).
